The WhatsApp Business API, officially part of the WhatsApp Business Platform, is Meta's interface that lets businesses send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale through software instead of a phone app. It powers broadcasts to opted-in customers, chatbots, shared team inboxes and integrations with CRMs and online stores.
Why it matters
The free WhatsApp Business App is built for one person on one phone. The API is built for teams and automation. It allows:
- Many agents on one business number
- Approved template messages for outreach and updates
- Chatbots, Flows, catalogues and payments
- Integrations with Shopify, CRMs, Google Sheets and webhooks
- Eligibility for the verified badge
How you access it
Businesses usually connect through a Business Solution Provider (BSP) or tech provider such as RapBooster, which provides the dashboard and tools. Meta charges per delivered template message by category, and providers charge a platform fee.
Example
A coaching institute sends class reminders (utility templates) to 3,000 students, while a chatbot answers fee questions inside the 24-hour service window (1,000 free service replies a month per number), and two counsellors handle admissions from a shared inbox.
