DLT registration is the process Indian businesses follow to send commercial SMS under TRAI's regulations. Businesses register as a principal entity on a telecom operator's DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) platform, then register their headers (sender IDs), message templates and consent templates. Operators block SMS that don't match registered details.
Why it matters
DLT was introduced to cut spam and fraud by making every commercial SMS traceable to a registered sender and an approved template. Without registration:
- Promotional, transactional and service SMS won't be delivered through telecom routes
- Mismatched template text gets blocked
- You risk penalties for non-compliance
Key pieces
- Principal entity: your registered business
- Header / Sender ID: the name customers see, such as "URBNTH"
- Content templates: exact message text with marked variables
- Consent templates: for promotional messaging
- Telemarketer: the SMS provider delivering your messages
Example
A clinic registers the header "SMILEC" and a service template for appointment reminders. Only messages matching that template's fixed text get delivered.
