WhatsApp Business API pricing in India has three layers: a platform fee paid to your provider (on RapBooster, a plan per WhatsApp number), Meta's per-message charge for template messages (marketing is roughly ₹0.86, utility and authentication about ₹0.12 each from 1 Oct 2026), and, with some providers, a per-message markup (RapBooster adds none). Replies inside the 24-hour service window get 1,000 free per number each month, then the utility rate.
That's the whole answer. The rest of this post shows you how the layers stack up on a real bill, so you don't get jump-scared by an invoice.
What are you actually paying for?
Think of it like a phone plan with a separate data meter.
| Layer | Who charges it | What it covers | Typical India cost (from 1 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform fee | Your provider (BSP or tech provider) | Dashboard, team inbox, broadcasts, chatbot, integrations | A plan per number on RapBooster |
| Meta charge | Meta, billed to you directly | Each delivered template message, by category | ~₹0.86 marketing, ~₹0.12 utility/auth |
| Provider markup | Some providers | Messaging infrastructure | None on RapBooster |
| GST | Government | 18% on the platform fee | +18% |
Meta prices are approximate and change. Always check Meta's official rate card before you plan a big campaign.
How does Meta's per-message pricing work now?
Since mid-2025, Meta charges per delivered template message instead of per 24-hour conversation. Every template belongs to one of three categories:
- Marketing: offers, launches, re-engagement, festive greetings. The most expensive category.
- Utility: order confirmations, delivery updates, appointment reminders. Cheap, and from 1 Oct 2026 charged even inside an open service window.
- Authentication: one-time passwords. Cheap.
And then there's service: when a customer messages you first, you get a 24-hour window for free-form replies. From 1 Oct 2026, each number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, then the utility rate. Inbound messages stay free. This is why a good chatbot and a fast team inbox literally save money.
What do RapBooster's WhatsApp plans cost?
WhatsApp Marketing is priced per WhatsApp number, with a free trial and no card required. Live prices are on the pricing page; all prices exclude 18% GST. The plan includes broadcasts, automations, the AI chatbot, the shared team inbox, Flows, Forms and the Catalogue.
Meta bills its per-message charges to you directly, and RapBooster adds nothing per message.
What does a real month look like?
Let's say you run a coaching institute in Jaipur with one WhatsApp number:
| Item | Volume | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing broadcast (new batch launch) | 5,000 msgs × ~₹0.86 | ~₹4,300 |
| Utility reminders (class timings) | 8,000 msgs × ~₹0.12 | ~₹960 |
| Student questions answered by chatbot | 3,000 replies (1,000 free, then ~₹0.12) | ~₹230 |
| Meta charges before GST | ~₹5,490 |
Add the WhatsApp Marketing plan for that number from the pricing page. Two lessons from that table:
- Marketing volume drives the bill. Segment ruthlessly. Sending an offer to 5,000 people who care beats blasting 20,000 who don't.
- Service replies are cheap. 1,000 a month per number are free, then the utility rate. Chats from click-to-WhatsApp ads are free for 72 hours, so get customers to message you first.
What are the hidden costs people forget?
- Template rejections. Rejected templates waste days, not money, but time is money. Our template approval guide fixes the usual mistakes.
- Low quality rating. If people block or report you, Meta can limit how many people you can message per day. Bad targeting costs you reach.
- Number migration. Moving a number that's already on the WhatsApp Business App to the API means that app stops working on it. Plan the switch.
- Team seats. Some providers charge per agent. Check before you hire.
- GST. 18% on the platform fee. Budget for it.
How do I keep my WhatsApp bill low?
- Use utility templates for what they're meant for. Order updates are utility, not marketing. Don't dress promos up as updates, though: Meta re-categorises them.
- Drive inbound. QR codes on packaging, a WhatsApp button on your site, and click-to-WhatsApp ads all start customer-initiated chats; ad chats are free for 72 hours.
- Automate first replies. A chatbot answers FAQs inside the service window, 24/7, and the first 1,000 service replies each month are free.
- Go yearly. RapBooster plans cost less per month when billed yearly.
- Clean your contact list. Numbers that aren't on WhatsApp still cost you effort and quality.
Is the API worth it over the free WhatsApp Business App?
If you send more than a few dozen messages a day, need more than one person answering chats, or want automation, yes. The free app caps broadcast lists at 256 contacts who have saved your number, works on a limited number of devices, and has no real automation. Read WhatsApp Business App vs API for the full breakdown.
What about GCC pricing?
Meta charges by the recipient's country code, not yours. Messaging UAE or Saudi numbers costs noticeably more per marketing message than India. If you sell into the Gulf, see our WhatsApp Business API in UAE guide.
How do you estimate your own monthly bill?
Grab last month's numbers and fill in this quick worksheet. It takes five minutes and saves you from surprise invoices.
- Count your marketing sends. How many people will receive offers, launches, festive greetings or re-engagement messages? Multiply by roughly ₹0.86 (Meta's rate) for Indian numbers.
- Count your utility sends. Order confirmations, shipping updates, reminders. Multiply by roughly ₹0.12 (Meta's rate). From 1 Oct 2026, this applies even when a customer chat is already open.
- Count authentication sends. OTPs for logins or COD confirmation. Multiply by roughly ₹0.12.
- Estimate inbound chats. Every customer-initiated chat opens a 24-hour service window. Each number gets 1,000 free service replies a month; add the rest at the utility rate (~₹0.12). Just make sure your team or chatbot can handle the volume.
- Add the platform plan. One WhatsApp Marketing plan per number; see the pricing page.
- Add 18% GST on the platform fee.
If the marketing line is the biggest by far (it usually is), that's where optimisation pays off first: tighter segments, fewer but better campaigns, and more journeys that start with the customer messaging you.
How many numbers do you need?
WhatsApp Marketing is priced per number, so the question is how many numbers you run, not which tier you pick. One number is right for most businesses. Add another when you run a separate brand, region or team that needs its own inbox and sender identity.
You can start on the free trial, send real test campaigns, and add numbers once you've seen your actual volumes. Planning on real data beats guessing.
Does WhatsApp pricing differ for GCC and international numbers?
Yes. Meta charges by the recipient's country code, and marketing messages to the UAE or Saudi Arabia (~₹4.21 each) cost about five times more than to India, from 1 Oct 2026. If you run cross-border campaigns, split your lists by country and budget each market separately.
The bottom line
WhatsApp API pricing isn't scary once you split it into the platform fee and Meta's per-message charges. Start with one number, send utility messages where they belong, make the most of your 1,000 free service messages, and track cost per campaign. You'll know your numbers before Meta does.
