CPC (cost per click) is the average amount you pay each time someone clicks your ad:
CPC = total ad spend ÷ number of clicks
On platforms like Google Ads, CPC is also a bidding model where you pay only when someone clicks.
What affects CPC
- Competition: more advertisers bidding on the same keyword or audience raises prices
- Quality and relevance: Google's Quality Score and Meta's ad relevance signals can lower costs for better ads
- Targeting: narrow, high-intent audiences often cost more per click but convert better
- Industry and location: finance, legal and real estate keywords tend to be pricier
- Seasonality: festive periods raise competition
CPC isn't the whole story
A cheap click that never converts is expensive. Track:
- Conversion rate on your landing page
- Cost per lead or acquisition
- ROAS for e-commerce
How to lower CPC (and cost per result)
- Tighten keyword and audience targeting
- Improve ad relevance and creative
- Use negative keywords (Search)
- Match the landing page to the ad
- Test click-to-WhatsApp for mobile-first audiences
Example
A clinic spends ₹12,000 on Google Search ads and gets 800 clicks, a CPC of ₹15. With 40 bookings, the cost per booking is ₹300, which is the number that actually matters.
