What Is Lead Scoring?

Lead scoring assigns points to leads based on fit and behaviour so sales teams can prioritise the prospects most likely to buy.

DefinitionLead scoring

Lead scoring assigns points to leads based on fit and behaviour so sales teams can prioritise the prospects most likely to buy.

Lead scoring is a method of ranking leads with points based on how well they fit your ideal customer (industry, budget, location, company size) and how engaged they are (replies, page visits, demo requests). High scorers go to sales first; low scorers get nurtured.

Why it matters

Sales time is limited. Scoring ensures your team calls the hottest leads first, instead of whoever enquired most recently or loudest.

Example scoring model

Signal Points
Budget matches your pricing +20
In your service area +15
Wants to start within 30 days +20
Replied on WhatsApp +10
Visited the pricing page +10
Student or job-seeker enquiry −30
No response in 14 days −10

Set a threshold (for example 50+) for "sales-ready".

Tips

  • Start simple with 5–8 signals, then refine using real closed-won data
  • Review scores monthly against actual conversions
  • Combine automatic scoring with salesperson judgement
